Pedagogical traditions that don't all originate in — or get evaluated by — Western meta-analytic research: Singapore Math's Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract sequence, Marton's Variation Theory (developed in Sweden and Hong Kong), Finnish phenomenon-based learning, Reggio Emilia's documentation practice, Ubuntu collective-knowledge tasks, Indigenous place-based inquiry, and the culturally responsive teaching tradition built on Banks, Gay, Ladson-Billings and Hammond. Editorial note: Western meta-analytic standards apply unevenly to non-Western pedagogical traditions. Variation Theory and CPA carry robust meta-analyses; culturally responsive teaching has a growing meta-analytic base; Ubuntu, Reggio, and place-based pedagogies operate in interpretive scholarly traditions without standardised effect sizes. We show that gap honestly rather than excluding traditions for not being measured on Western terms — the gap is partly a measurement problem, not always a quality problem.

How to read these numbers

  • "Months of progress" is a teacher-friendly shorthand from the EEF Toolkit. It is not directly comparable across studies — different meta-analyses use different baselines, age groups, and outcome measures. Treat it as a magnitude indicator, not a precise prediction.
  • Cohen's d is the standardised effect size used in the original meta-analyses. d ≈ 0.40 is Hattie's "hinge point" — the average effect of a year of schooling. Higher = larger relative effect, but context matters more than the number.
  • Effect sizes are averages. A skill that shows large average effects can still produce small or negative effects in a specific classroom. Use these as a starting point for professional judgment, not a substitute for it.
  • Sources are dated. Where multiple meta-analyses exist, we lead with the most recent quality study and cross-reference EEF where available.
  • Implementation cost (Low / Medium / High) is a practical signal — not an exact science — of what your school needs to invest in teacher time, training, and structural changes to actually run the intervention well. It is the editorial team's reading of what the intervention typically requires in practice. Use it to gauge whether something is straightforward to introduce or a larger undertaking — not as a budget figure.

  • Colour bands signal calibration, not value. An intervention in the "below typical" band is not "bad" — it means the intervention's average effect is below the typical effect of a year of schooling. That can still be appropriate for specific contexts the average does not capture.
  • "No independent meta-analysis found" is not the same as "doesn't work". Several traditions in this domain — Reggio Emilia, Ubuntu pedagogy, place-based and Indigenous education — operate in interpretive scholarly traditions that don't translate cleanly into Cohen's d. The absence of a number is information, not a judgment.

Variation Theory Task Designer

Design tasks built on Marton's Variation Theory — make critical features of a concept discernible by holding everything constant except the feature you want students to see. Four patterns: contrast (varying values to reveal an aspect), separation (varying one aspect while others are fixed), generalization (varying surface appearance while the principle is fixed), fusion (varying multiple critical aspects simultaneously). Anchored on the meta-analysis of the underlying mechanism — comparing cases and contrasting examples — at d=0.50 (Alfieri et al. 2013). The pedagogical theory (Marton, Pang, Kullberg, Runesson) has a substantial Hong Kong and Swedish learning-study tradition built around it, but that tradition reports outcomes in interpretive case-study form rather than pooled effect sizes — so we anchor on the mechanism meta-analysis.

Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Sequence Designer

Design a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract learning sequence — start with manipulatives that let students physically model the concept (Cuisenaire rods, base-10 blocks, fraction bars), move to pictorial representations that preserve the structural relationships (bar models, number lines, area diagrams), then connect to abstract symbolic notation. Built on Bruner's enactive-iconic-symbolic theory and operationalised in Singapore Maths via the bar-model method. Anchored on Sokolowski (2018) meta-analysis of representations in elementary mathematics at g=0.53. Two caveats: a more recent meta on multiple-vs-single representations across all mathematical domains (Liu, Ji & Guo 2026, Educational Psychology Review) found a more modest g=0.29; and the EEF's RCT of UK Mathematics Mastery (which used CPA-based Inspire Maths) showed smaller programme-level effects than the Singapore literature suggests. Effects depend heavily on whether the abstract phase actually arrives — manipulatives held too long, or not connected back to symbolic notation, lose the effect.

Culturally Responsive Teaching Designer

Redesign a lesson to centre students' cultural backgrounds, community knowledge, and lived experience in the curriculum, in instruction, and in classroom interaction. Built on Gay's culturally responsive teaching, Ladson-Billings' culturally relevant pedagogy, Paris & Alim's culturally sustaining pedagogy, and Hammond's "ready for rigor" framework. Honest evidence note: the most-cited review — Aronson & Laughter (2016) Review of Educational Research — is a qualitative synthesis of 45 empirical studies that consistently found positive student outcomes across content areas; it is not a pooled meta-analysis and reports no Cohen's d. The most recent quantitative meta-analysis (Cipriano et al. 2024 culturally responsive SEL) covered only 7 studies on SEL outcomes, not academic achievement primarily. The construct has 30+ years of conceptual scholarship and converging qualitative evidence; what it does not yet have is a robust Western-style pooled effect size on academic outcomes. We include the card with that gap visible because excluding it would treat measurement as a synonym for quality.

Place-Based Inquiry Anchor

Anchor curriculum learning in a specific local place — built environment, ecosystem, community, heritage — so students develop subject knowledge through the place rather than abstracted from it. Two traditions converge here: Sobel and Gruenewald's community-and-ecology-focused place-based education, which has a substantial meta-analytic base (Van de Wetering et al. 2022 found g=0.38 on attitudes and g=0.41 on behavior across 169 studies and 176,007 participants in 43 countries), and Castagno & Brayboy's Indigenous education tradition, which operates in interpretive scholarship without pooled effect sizes. The Indigenous tradition is not absent of evidence — it is evidenced differently. Use this skill when connecting academic content to students' local environment and heritage; pair with culturally responsive teaching when working with Indigenous, immigrant, or heritage-rich communities.

Cross-Cultural Task Validity Checker

Audit an educational practice for cultural assumptions and cross-cultural validity. Ask the WEIRD questions (Henrich, Heine & Norenzayan 2010): does the evidence base for this practice rest on Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic samples? What does it assume about parent-school relationships, classroom hierarchy, individual-versus-collective achievement, learning-as-display-of-knowledge? Where does it not transfer? Use when adapting curricula for diverse contexts, when questioning a "universal" practice claim, or when reviewing whether US/UK research generalises to a Swedish (or any non-WEIRD-default) context. Framework, not intervention — no Cohen's d applies; the value is in better adoption decisions and avoiding the install of practices whose evidence base doesn't generalise. The bias has persisted (Nielsen et al. 2017 found roughly 90% of developmental-psych samples still WEIRD a decade after the original paper); the Deffner, Rohrer & McElreath 2022 causal-modelling framework provides tools for thinking through which findings should and shouldn't generalise.

Phenomenon-Based Unit Anchor

Anchor a multidisciplinary teaching unit in a real-world phenomenon that requires multiple subject lenses to understand fully — climate, migration, food systems, urban planning, a particular building, a local river — so students engage subject content through the phenomenon rather than abstracted from it. The Finnish 2016 core curriculum (POPS-2016) makes at least one such multidisciplinary module per school year mandatory; the approach is associated with Lonka and the Helsinki research group. Honest evidence positioning: phenomenon-based learning as a broad pedagogy has no clean independent meta-analysis (Adipat 2024 is a conceptual review; Kreijkes & Greatorex 2024 found the integrated-curriculum review literature is methodologically weak). The closest meta-analytic proxy is its most-studied subset: STEM integration. Zhou, Dong & Wang's 2025 meta-analysis in Research in Science Education found integrated STEM produced a substantial achievement gain (g=0.66 across 40 studies, 15,577 students), with the largest effects from context integration (anchoring in a real phenomenon) and inquiry-based pedagogy — both core to phenomenon-based learning.

Reggio Documentation Protocol

Design a pedagogical documentation protocol for making children's learning processes visible — photographs, transcribed conversations, samples of work, observation notes — and re-visiting them collaboratively with the children, teachers, and families to interpret what learning was happening and decide what to plan next. Built on Malaguzzi's founding work at Reggio Emilia and Carlina Rinaldi's subsequent theoretical development; an alternative to assessment-as-measurement that treats children as competent meaning-makers. Honest evidence note: pedagogical documentation as a discrete practice has no meta-analysis isolating its effect; the broader Reggio approach was rigorously evaluated by Biroli, Del Boca, Heckman et al. 2018 in Research in Economics — they found significant positive long-run effects on employment, socio-emotional skills, high school graduation, voting, and obesity when comparing Reggio to no formal childcare, but small and statistically insignificant differences when comparing Reggio to other formal childcare (state, religious). The tradition's scholarly evidence is interpretive (Rinaldi's In Dialogue with Reggio Emilia 2006, Hundred Languages exhibition catalogue, EECER documentation studies); the quantitative comparative evidence does not establish a Reggio-specific advantage over other quality early-years programmes.

Emergent Project Design Scaffold

Scaffold an emergent project from observed children's interests and fascinations, using Reggio-inspired progettazione: identify a recurring interest, set provocations (open-ended materials, questions, encounters with experts), document the children's first responses, then plan next steps based on what the children's responses revealed they were thinking about — instead of pre-deciding the project arc. Best for early years and primary settings where the curriculum has flexibility. Honest evidence note: no meta-analysis isolates emergent curriculum as a discrete practice. The most recent systematic review (Tay & Mukherjee 2025 European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, 39 studies) is thematic, not quantitative — it identifies recurring themes (children's agency, co-leadership, documentation, virtual adaptation) without pooled effect sizes. Biroli, Del Boca, Heckman et al. 2018 evaluated the broader Reggio approach and found significant long-run benefits vs no formal childcare but small and insignificant differences vs other formal childcare. The tradition's evidence base is interpretive scholarship (Rinaldi, Edwards, Gandini, Forman The Hundred Languages of Children); a Reggio-specific quantitative advantage over other quality early-years programmes has not been established.

Tasks centre on mutual responsibility, collective sense-making, and the obligation to contribute one's understanding to the group's understanding. Rooted in the scholarship of Mkabela, Letseka, Higgs, Le Grange and Waghid on African philosophy of education. Honest evidence note: Ubuntu pedagogy operates in an interpretive scholarly tradition that does not translate cleanly into Cohen's d. A 2024 PRISMA literature review of empirical studies 2014-2024 documents growing scholarly interest, particularly in South African teacher education, but no quantitative meta-analysis with pooled effect sizes exists. The Western collaborative-learning meta-analytic literature (EEF Collaborative learning approaches strand, +5 months) overlaps mechanically with Ubuntu task design but rests on different ontological assumptions about why collective work matters — Ubuntu names that difference rather than dissolving it.
