Gap Tracer
When a child is stuck, the problem often sits further back than the skill in front of them. Pick the skill, check the building blocks one question at a time, and get a plan for where to start practising.
1. What is the child stuck on?
Start with what the child is struggling with right now: the homework that won't work out, or something the teacher mentioned. Type a few words that describe the skill, then pick the closest match. For example, if the child…
- can't remember what 7 × 8 is — try times tables
- doesn't see that 2/4 and 1/2 are the same amount — try equivalent fractions
- can't read the time on a clock with hands — try telling time
- gets the change wrong when paying in a shop — try giving change
- guesses words instead of sounding them out — try blending sounds
Teachers can also search by a curriculum code, such as 3.NF.3 (Common Core) or AC9M4N03 (Australian Curriculum).
2. Check the building blocks
3. Where to spend your time
Start at the top. Each skill comes after the skills it builds on, and the plan ends with the skill the child was stuck on.

Thanks — that helps.
About this tool
What it does
Shows which earlier skills a skill builds on, gives you one quick question for each, and turns the ones that aren't secure yet into a practice plan, foundations first.
What it doesn't do
It doesn't diagnose, measure a child's level or replace a teacher's judgement, and it can't promise that a child will catch up. The questions are prompts for your own judgement, not a test.
Where there are activities
Practice activities exist only in Mathematics and Science — of Mathematics skills and of Science skills have at least one. We only show activities you can do with paper, objects and conversation. Other subjects show the building blocks and the questions, without activities.
Curricula
Skills are linked to the Common Core State Standards (US), the National Curriculum in England and the Australian Curriculum v9.
Who wrote it
